Barbara will demonstrate how to create complex enameled images, repeat designs and the illusion of texture utilizing dry screen printing with powdered enamels on two dimensional pieces. She will show you how to utilize this process to quickly accomplish colorful, exciting and intricate enameled surfaces via layered applications of sifted and screened opaque and transparent enamels.
Dry silkscreen printing allows one to achieve individual images and detailed designs that are easily repeated, not possible with stencils and possibly too tedious to complete by hand more than once.
The basics – such as enamel types and preparation; color application order; grain and sifter screen size and firing procedures - while not the focus of this presentation, are relevant and will be given appropriate attention.

Enameling on Steel (or copper) with Liquid Enamels
Explore firing liquid enamels on steel (or copper if you prefer) using variety of techniques for application and creating your designs.
We will apply layers of liquid enamel on shapes cut from sheet steel. We will also apply enamel onto blue “grainite ware” cups, for the fun of it and for “instantly useable results”.
Methods of application include dipping, brushing and spraying. Dipping each piece allows for evenly coating the entire object inside and out. Brushing provides a method for building up layers of white in select areas. Spraying the liquid enamel achieves an even or a graduated coat in specific areas or over the entire piece. Further surface design development will be accomplished through use of stencils, masking, scrafitto, decal application and other decorative techniques. The basics of enameling, along with when to use/not use steel ground, firing and finishing will be demonstrated.
This class will be focused on using liquid enamels on steel and copper. Participants are welcome to also bring their own steel or copper pieces to enamel.
Hands on time will allow students to work on enamel pieces that are suitable for finished pieces or future technical reference.

GGG is offering this 5-day workshop with Atlanta Contemporary Jewelry Show artist, Barbara Minor. This workshop is perfect for those new to enameling as well as enamellists who want to explore new techniques with an internationally recognized enamel jewelry artist. We will learn inspiring, decorative techniques that quickly yield colorful, exciting and complex enameled surface designs while gaining basic information and skills for successful enameling with transparent and opaque enamel colors.
Using opaque enamels we will explore innovative surface design techniques that will include dry silkscreen printing to achieve repeat and detailed patterns; found or purchased stencils to create varied and unusual designs; and scribing through layers of powdered enamel to create spontaneous designs. We’ll then transition to using transparent enamels with the same techniques in combination with underglaze black and silver or gold foil on copper.
Using these techniques - separately or together with opaque or transparent enamels – will allow you to achieve diverse results based on your ideas. Extra detail will be achieved by learning to inlay enamel color and glass seed beads into your enamel designs. Enameling basics will include metals to enamel on, fast/easy methods for cleaning metal prior to enameling, particle size choice, counter enamel and dry enamel application methods on flat and slightly formed metal.
Students will have time to work on and fire pieces using the various enameling techniques demonstrated. Pieces created in the workshop will serve as examples for future reference or will be suitable for setting with other jewelry techniques and materials.
Barbara Minor has degrees in jewelry and metalsmithing. She began enameling during graduate school, continued explorations of enamel processes, and began enameling on formed metal, creating enamel jewelry and narrative reliefs in enamel.
